Mental Health Emergencies

The University Counseling and Wellness Center (UCWC) provides crisis intervention for Â鶹Ïà¹Ø±¨µÀstudents experiencing mental health emergencies such as psychological trauma or thoughts of seriously harming self or others.

Accessing Help for Yourself

  • If a medical emergency occurs, call 911.
  • For emergency mental health assistance during our normal office hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), you can come to UCWC @ 300 Student Center Circle or call our office at (251) 460-7051.
  • During non-business hours, you can call UCWC at (251) 460-7051 and press Option 3 to speak to a mental health clinician.
  • During non-business hours, you may also contact the Â鶹Ïà¹Ø±¨µÀPolice Department at (251) 460-6312.
  • Other area resources for mental health emergencies include: 
    • Call 988 - newly launched Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help students experiencing mental health-related distress. Students can call 988 or chat  for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
    • Â鶹Ïà¹Ø±¨µÀHealth Freestanding Emergency Department (very close to campus) @ 181 Hillcrest Road.
    • Hospital emergency rooms. Hospitals include: University Hospital (2451 University Hospital Drive); Providence Hospital (6801 Airport Boulevard) or Springhill Memorial Hospital (3719 Dauphin Street).

If you have a serious concern about the mental health of a Â鶹Ïà¹Ø±¨µÀstudent, you can call the University Counseling and Wellness Center during our normal office hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), or, during non-business hours, you can call UCWC at (251) 460-7051 and press Option 3 to speak to a mental health clinician.

You may also contact University Police at (251) 460-6312, 911, or have the person go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
