LPN to BSN Pathway

The 麻豆相关报道 College of Nursing LPN to BSN Pathway is specifically designed to meet the needs of Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses with a current LPN license seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

The LPN to BSN Professional Component consists of courses that address knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are needed to be successful in today鈥檚 dynamic healthcare settings. Students will enjoy challenging themselves to explore relevant topics related to modern day professional nursing issues. This program is taught entirely in a hybrid online format and is a flexible option for working students who are managing work and family responsibilities, as well as educational assignments. Program graduates will have the skills to provide enhanced patient care, promote health and aid in reducing barriers to health care, and apply research to clinical practice within rural and underserved communities. Graduates will increase their knowledge and experience in the care of vulnerable populations while emphasizing the impact of social determinants of health, health equity, health literacy, communication and leadership skills, community health nursing competencies, and integrated behavioral health services on health outcomes. The program is designed to better prepare LPNs to collaborate with the interprofessional team in providing quality care in multiple work settings.

The 麻豆相关报道College of Nursing is currently accepting applicants who reside in Alabama and Mississippi. Students who reside in other states may be considered for admission but must commit to completing clinical rotations in Alabama or Mississippi. Clinical rotations are completed with an approved BSN-prepared registered nurse preceptor under the direction and supervision of a 麻豆相关报道College of Nursing clinical faculty. Clinical rotations are required to be scheduled throughout the semester in alignment with the preceptor's schedule and related course assignments.

Online LPN to BSN Professional Component

  1. The Professional Component consists of fourteen (14) nursing courses for a total of 47 credit hours.
  2. Nursing courses must be completed at the 麻豆相关报道.
  3. Upper division nursing courses taken at another institution will not transfer or apply toward the 47 credit hours required to earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at USA.
  4. Students proceed through the fourteen online nursing courses at their desired pace.
  5. The Professional Component may be completed in a minimum of four (4) semesters.
  6. The Professional Component must be completed within five (5) years of beginning the Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum.
  7. Fourteen (14) credits of nursing courses from LPN program will be awarded to the degree upon graduation.
  8. Sixty-two credits of general education courses are required for the completion of the BSN degree.

鈻   Admission Requirements for Students with LPN from Regionally Accredited Institution

The College of Nursing Admissions Committee and the Dean of the College select applicants best qualified for and most likely to succeed in the study of nursing. Enrollment in the Professional Component is limited and competitive. Students are admitted without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sex, or qualified disability. Students must be in good standing with all academic institutions/nursing programs that they have attended in order to be admitted to the LPN-BSN program.

Students in the BSN Professional Component are required to complete clinical requirements. LPN to BSN students may be required to complete clinical rotations on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) as well as weekdays.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the institution(s) from which prerequisite and LPN courses were completed were/are regionally-accredited. Applicants may contact the 麻豆相关报道Admissions Office for assistance in determining their previous schools' accreditation standing.

Students may  be accepted into a special 6-semester LPN-BSN pathway if the LPN program was completed at a non-regionally accredited institution. This program has the same prerequisite requirements as the Traditional BSN pathway and requires the completion of the same courses as the Traditional BSN pathway. Additional time to completion is required for the online offering to allow LPNs maintain their current employment.

鈻   Steps to Apply to the LPN-BSN Program

Step 1

The first step in the admission process is to apply for admission to the University of South Alabama through the Undergraduate Admission Office.  Please complete the application for admission to the 麻豆相关报道.

The easiest way to apply is online through the . You will be asked to create an account. This login will allow you to fill out an application and check back to monitor your application status.

Step 2

The next step is to submit official transcripts from each college or university you have attended to the 麻豆相关报道 Office of Admissions.

The Registrar鈥檚 Office will review and evaluate your transcripts. They will update your Degree Audit in PAWS which is located on the Student Logins page

While you are waiting for the Registrar鈥檚 Office to review your transcripts, you are encouraged to review the prerequisites needed on this webpage. Required prerequisites are located under the Prerequisites for LPN-BSN Program tab on this page.  

The LPN to BSN Prerequisites consist of nineteen (19) courses, totaling 62 credits hours. These general education courses MUST be completed at a regionally-accredited institution BEFORE applying to the LPN to BSN program.

Step 4

The next step is to apply for admission to the professional component of the BSN program in the LPN-BSN pathway. Do not submit this application until all prerequisites have been completed.  

Admission to the College of Nursing LPN to BSN pathway requires the submission of a completed with a non-refundable $25 application fee. If you submit an incomplete application or apply to the wrong semester, you will be required to apply again for the correct semester and pay the application fee again. 

Step 5

Submit a resume or CV showing your work experience.  This should be a Word or PDF document.  Email this document to conlpn2bsn@southalabama.edu after you submit your application to the professional component of the BSN program. 

Step 6

Students who are taking prerequisites the semester before they are requesting admission to the LPN-BSN program will be required to submit unofficial transcripts from other universities to the College of Nursing via email at (conlpn2bsn@southalabama.edu) for review of prerequisite courses. All transcripts will be reevaluated to ensure all prerequisite courses are met prior to an offer of acceptance.

Step 7

Students who have attended a Nursing program at another school are required to provide the following to the College of Nursing via email at conlpn2bsn@southalabama.edu 

  1. Students who have left a Nursing Program at another University without finishing are required to submit a Letter of Good Standing (verifying student was in good moral, ethical, and legal standing with no previous disciplinary action) from the Nursing Program, signed by the Nursing Administrator of the program;
  2. Transcript of all nursing courses taken with the grades earned;
  3. Transfer credit will be considered upon review of course syllabi.

Step 8

Admission to the LPN-BSN program is also contingent on the submission of the following through the college鈥檚 Medical Document Manager:

  1. Health data forms
  2. Evidence of personal health insurance
  3. Current CPR certification
  4. A negative drug screen
  5. An acceptable background check

鈻   Health Requirements

Please note the following tests, titers, and immunizations are required for admission into the Nursing Program. It is very important to start working on these requirements early to allow time to complete all of them by the deadline that will be included in admission packets.

  • Two Hepatitis B adult immunizations to start clinical rotations; Third dose and follow-up titer required to continue.
  • Proof of two MMR immunizations or titer 
  • Positive Varicella titer; If negative, a booster immunization is required.
  • Flu Vaccine
  • TB Test (Initial 2-step PPD test or blood test {Quantiferon Gold test or T-spot] 1-step PPD test or blood test annually thereafter)
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDaP) Vaccine 

*Hepatitis B immunizations may take up to 6 months to obtain the full adult series of immunizations as well as another month after the last immunization to have the titer completed. As defined by the CDC, adult immunization schedules refer to adults aged 19 years or older.

Students accepted into this BSN program in the College of Nursing are required to complete all health requirements. All requirements should be completed no later than one month prior to the first day of classes for the professional component. Instructions will be provided about the use of CastleBranch, an online health document management system, upon acceptance to the professional component.
